Compress your data

Bill Kearney wants us to Use compression on your web server. I couldn't agree more, and posted a comment:

It's about time someone stood up and said this. As one of the committers on Roller (http://www.rollerweblogger.com) I've added gzip compression for both the web pages and the RSS feed - it'll be coming in version 0.9.7.

I don't think Dave has this in the README for the next release, guess that means I should put it in there ;-)

Later: there was some bugs with the implementation I *cough* borrowed *cough* from Marty Hall © 2002 Marty Hall; may be freely used or adapted, but I fixed them.
More to the point, my test page went from 34028 bytes to 7939: 23.33% of the original size!

Re: But what do you mean? Or "Re: I am sorry"

I honestly believe you; that you weren't *trying* to be patronizing, Chiara. I think perhaps blogs are too much like email or IM, where it is difficult to express emotions clearly. I read too much into the phrases "You are so adorable but utterly helpless" and "How should i write dearest Lance?". I've seen you use "dearest" before, so I shouldn't have taken it personally.

Perhaps it was calling me a "typical male geek" that set me off. I hate to think of myself as typical in any way, whether I am or not.

I likewise appreciate that you've been reading my blog, though I must confess that I suspect my content to be less compelling than your own ;-)

Re: But what do you mean?

Chiara responded to my non-understanding. Now that she has stated clearly what she was saying, I still don't see it in the previous ramble. Chiara states that she wants to be understood, and the only advice I can give is: get those run-on sentences under control.

Oh, and "dearest" Chiara, please don't patronize me.

I need a Fix

Erik's site has been down for more than a day now, and I think I'm going through withdrawal! Where else will I turn for linking goodness? Erik is the best aggregator I've found yet!

But what do you mean?

I enjoy reading Chiara as much as the next guy (okay, maybe not), but as often as not I'm not sure what she is saying. Today's response to Matt's obsession with productivity is one such example: I read the whole thing, and I don't know what she is saying.

Is Chiara saying Matt's whole attitude is wrong? That he is wrong to blame his obsession on the "American work ethic"? Or is she agreeing with him? That she feels the same thing but doesn't let it paralyze her? Or that it does? I cannot tell.

Same old code, new lame name

Under threat of persecution prosecution I've renamed the project formerly known as Sniffer [a registered trademark of a large and ruthless company] ... jSniffy! Woohoo. Just for shits and giggles I did a Google search for "sniffer": my little project showed up on page 14, long after many other possible "trademark infringements", several of which look to actually compete with the no-longer-named company's product.

Roller is ready to Hibernate

Some time ago I laid the foundation for Roller to have a pluggable persistence layer. Dave has followed up by implementing a Hibernate layer. Perhaps this will inspire me to finish the Prevayler work I had started (mostly as an opportunity to play with the technology). But then, as Dave says, "it is no fun maintaining two implementations of the very same thing"; do I want to make it three?!
